Shaking table testing of hard layered soil-pile-structure interaction system

LI Peizhen, REN Hongmei, LU Xilin, SONG Heping, CHEN Yueqing

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2007, Volume 1, Issue 3,   Pages 346-352 doi: 10.1007/s11709-007-0046-7

Abstract: Shaking table tests on a dynamic interaction system of hard layered soil, pile foundation and frame structure were carried out. The earthquake damage of the superstructure and foundation was reproduced. Based on these tests, several key issues about the seismic response of the dynamic soil-structure interaction (SSI) system were studied. The natural frequency of the system was less than that of the structure on rigid foundation if the SSI is not taken into account, while its damping ratio was larger than that of the structure. The mode shape of the system was different from that of the structure on the fixed base in that there were rocking and swinging at the foundation. Magnification or reduction of vibration transferred by soil was related to soil characteristic, excitation magnitude, and so on. Generally, sand magnifies vibration, while viscous powder soil dampens vibration. The components of the acceleration response at the top of the superstructure were based on the relative magnitude of the rocking stiffness, the swing stiffness of the foundation and the stiffness of the super-structure. The multi-direction excitations have little effect on the key issues of the horizontal SSI.

Transfer function solving, simulating and testing of thermal dynamics characteristics of a ballscrew

Junyong XIA, Bo WU, Youmin HU, Tielin SHI,

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2010, Volume 5, Issue 2,   Pages 233-241 doi: 10.1007/s11465-010-0014-0

Abstract: Based on the theory of heat transfer, the transfer function between the thermal deformation of any point on the lead screw and the temperature of heat sources of a ballscrew under the influence of multi-changeable heat sources is solved by using the Laplace transform method. By solving the amplitude-frequency characteristics and phase-frequency characteristics of the transfer function, the steady-state response of thermal deformation of the ballscrew is obtained, and the thermal dynamics characteristics of the lead screw under the influence of multi-heat sources are further studied. Comparing with the result of finite-element simulation, the theoretical analyzing result accords with the steady-state part of the finite-element simulating result. Through tests of the steady-state response of thermal deformation, the thermal dynamics characteristics are further studied. The curves of tests by and large accord with the theoretical analyzing result, which shows that the method of transfer function is correct and valid in solving the steady-state response of thermal deformation.

Ambient vibration testing and updating of the finite element model of a simply supported beam bridge

Ivan Gomez ARAUJO, Esperanza MALDONADO, Gustavo Chio CHO

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2011, Volume 5, Issue 3,   Pages 344-354 doi: 10.1007/s11709-011-0124-8

Abstract: An ambient vibration test on a concrete bridge constructed in 1971 and calibration of its finite element model are presented. The bridge is characterized by a system of post-tensioned and simply supported beams. The dynamic characteristics of the bridge, i.e. natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios were computed from the ambient vibration tests by using the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA). Then, these characteristics were used to update the finite element model of the bridge by formulating an optimization problem and then using Genetic Algorithms (GA) to solve it. From the results of the ambient vibration test of this type of bridge, it is concluded that two-dimensional mode shapes exist: in the longitudinal and transverse; and these experimentally obtained dynamic characteristics were also achieved in the analytical model through updating. The application of GAs as optimization techniques showed great versatility to optimize any number and type of variables in the model.
